Lesson 1 (2 Weeks) |
Using How to Steal a Dog or other grade 4 Junior Great Book as an instructional tool for Constructed Response, Teachers will instruct students on strategies for constructed response. Students will complete a writing prompt of teacher’s choice for How to Steal A Dog. Prompt must require text evidence and be scored on the 4th grade Constructed Response Rubric to provide formative feedback prior to administering the Lawn Boy common task. Reading How to Steal a Dog will require more than two weeks; however, the Constructed Response should occur two weeks into reading the story.

Lesson 2 (5-7 Days) |
Using the And Then Story Starters, instruct students and provide formative feedback on concluding stories connected to starters. Story writing from a story starter is an important and required skill for students in grade 4.

Lesson 3 (At least 1 lesson per Week) |
Grammar and conventions are important skills for students in grade 4. Use aligned language and conventions standards in Quill for instruction. Note that additional lessons are available through LearnZillion.

Lesson 4 (At least 1 lesson per Week) |
Reading Fluency - use strategies such as Reader’s Theater, Dramatic Reading from World Book, and quick reads. Note for interventions we have Read Naturally. Use Project Read Pre-assessment to build instructional plan for class. Readers Theatre Resource

Lesson 5 (Two Weeks) |
After direct instruction, and practice within the class, students will complete an independent close read.

Lesson 6 (Four Weeks) |
Complete Unit 1.1 from World Course. Note this unit ties into Stemscopes and Makerspaces.

Lesson 7 (Ongoing) |
Collect formative data on student speaking and listening skills during Book Talks and Socratic Seminars using The 4th grade rubric for speaking and listening must be used.

Lesson 8 (Ongoing) |
Academic and content vocabulary must be taught throughout the unit. See below for academic vocabulary.

Complete direct instruction on Narrative Writing. The Lucy Calkins lessons are a great teaching resource for these lessons. This will carry into unit 4.2.
