Within the lesson, use simple drawn pictures to model the food items the students brainstorm. This will help limited English students to remember which word goes along with their food idea in their writing.
Students who use the scale to rate themselves a 0, 1 or 2 will be called to the back table to work with using a sentence stem rather than create their own sentence. This will also allow the students at the back table to begin writing while the teacher monitors the remaining students as they settle into their writing spaces with necessary supplies.
Please note, teaching students to use the writing conventions scale honestly is a taught procedure. The students may want to say they are a "4" to avoid extra attention. It is essential for the learning scale to work as that the teacher walks the room and briefly restates the number the student wrote and confirms agreement or disagreement.
For students who are above grade level in their writing, teacher will ask these students to write multiple sentences about what their caterpillar would eat and focus on where the caterpillar might be when eating these foods. The illustrations must match the story line.

Extensions
Extensions: Having the students share their final writing product in an Author's Chair (see videohttp://demo.editurepd.com/primary-independent-writing/authors-chair-in-kindergarten/) before mounting with green or red construction paper for the bulletin board display allows the students to take pride in their accomplishments. It also creates a community feeling as the students praise one another or ask clarifying questions. Adapted from www.cpalms.org
